“AGRICULTURAL  LAND  USE  SINCE  STATEHOOD”

By

Dr. Carol Ferguson

NREM Associate Professor

Date: March 15, 2010

Time: 3 pm

Location: St. John 11

In August 2009, Hawaii commemorated its first 50 years as a state with a conference and other ceremonies http://hawaii.gov/statehood/.  One concurrent session focused on natural resource use and management, including a retrospective look at changes in agricultural land use and related factors.  In 1959, agricultural enterprises accounted for over half of Hawaii’s total land area.  Data were compiled from various sources to document the transformation of Hawaii’s landscape from large-scale plantations and cattle ranches to a mosaic of diversified rural and urban-type land uses.  This transformation has brought both positive and negative impacts on Hawaii’s natural and social environment, and presents new opportunities and challenges for the state’s future.
