Hawaii Voyager Upgrade Notification

10 July 2009

Aloha –

Next week, starting Monday July 13 and going through Friday July 17, the library will be installing a major update to the software for its catalog system (Hawaii Voyager). During this time, a searchable copy of the catalog will be available, at the regular URL (http://uhmanoa.lib.hawaii.edu). However, the catalog will not be “live.” This means that:

1. The status of any particular title (i.e. whether it is Not Checked Out or Checked Out) will not necessarily be accurate.

2. Online requests of items from UHM Hawaiian and Pacific Collections, Sinclair Audiovisual Center and Government Documents will not be available.

a. For Hawaiian and Pacific requests and Audiovisual Center requests, paper request slips must be submitted at the appropriate department’s circulation counter.

b. For Government Documents requests, which can take up to 24 hours to be retrieved, requests should be called in to 956-8230, or e-mailed to govdocs@hawaii.edu.

3. Intrasystem loan requests (ISL, i.e. within the UH System) will not be available.

4. Interlibrary loan requests (ILL, outside the UH System) will not be functioning as normal. Urgent requests that can not wait until the system is restored the following week can be submitted via e-mail to libill@hawaii.edu.

This message was sent by the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections. Questions for H/P access can be sent to speccoll@hawaii.edu, or called in to 956-8264.

Karate: From Okinawa to Hawaii

6 July 2009

The world premiere of the exhibit, “Karate: From Okinawa to Hawaii,” opened in UH Manoa’s Hamilton Bridge Gallery on July 1, 2009.  The exhibit features images from the collection of the Hawaii Karate Museum under the direction of Charles C. Goodin, and is sponsored by the Center for Okinawan Studies, Center for Japanese Studies, Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library.  The exhibit will run from July 1 – August 28, 2009 and is open to the public during Hamilton Library Building hours.

In conjunction with the exhibit, there will be a karate demonstration by senior instructors and students of the Hawaii Karate Kenkyukai at the UH Manoa Art Department Auditorium on Sunday, July 12, 2009 from 10:30 – 11:45 am.  The demonstration and the exhibit are free and open to the public.

A one hour lecture on the early transmission of Karate from Okinawa to Hawaii will be given by Charles C. Goodin on Sunday, July 19th at 3:00 p.m. in Room 301 of Hamilton Library.  The lecture is also free of charge.
