Introduction to SciFinder Scholar
The University of Hawai’i at Manoa Hamilton Library is offering a workshop on SciFinder Scholar, a powerful search tool for chemistry and related disciplines from Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS).
Date: Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Time: 2:45-4:15 pm
Location: Hamilton Library Addition, Room A156 (near the Science & Technology Commons Area)
UH graduate students in the sciences and engineering with a basic chemistry background are invited to attend.
This workshop will provide a basic overview of SciFinder Scholar, so it is appropriate for those who have limited or no experience working with the program.
Topics to be covered include:
· Content of the databases
· Creating topic searches
· Searching by author or company
· Analyzing & refining references
· Locating a substance by identifier or molecular formula
· Retrieving full-text and related references
· Printing & saving results
The instructor is Leslie Hamasaki, a graduate student in the Library and Information Science Program and intern with Hamilton Library’s Science and Technology Department.

These workshops will cover essential EndNote functions – perfect for the beginner or those who are not familiar with EndNote X2. Topics that will be covered include:

* Importing references from a database and manually entering a reference into an EndNote Library

UH Manoa graduate students can reserve a space in one of the new workshops at the Web site,
“Evolution of Pacific Island Biota” is a three-day, stand-alone meeting to be held on Kauai, Hawaii in January or May 2010. It is designed to bring together a diverse international group of experts and students to examine the biogeography and evolution of terrestrial, near-shore, and freshwater biota from across the tree-of-life, including humans, which are distributed across the Pacific Islands.
There will be a variety of ways to participate in the meeting, including field trips, public lectures, invited presentations, poster and discussion sessions. The meeting will be organized around several theme questions, and will focus on both empirical studies and methods for analyzing biogeographical data.
THEME QUESTION EXAMPLES
• What phylogeographic patterns are found in the Pacific Islands?
• Do Pacific Islands act as sources for dispersal to other areas?
• Do fossil data change our interpretation of evolution and biogeography of the Pacific Islands?
• What are the evolutionary patterns of community assembly?
• Do Pacific biogeographic patterns track the geologic or human history of the area?
• How do data from biogeography and evolution inform conservation efforts?

Our entire digital aerial photograph collection, consisting of 7,000 images of Hawai’i taken between 1950-2000 is now available for viewing and download at the MAGIS (Maps, Aerials and GIS) Web site:

The photographs are organized by county and then by island within each county. Coverage denotes the approximate area where the photograph lies within the USGS quadrangle (1:24,000) of the same name.
Most of the aerial photographs were taken by USGS and USDA, we also have a few flightlines and corresponding photographs from NOAA.
A jpeg version is available for free download. However, should you need a high resolution image, please let us know. All we need is the unique identifier located in the metadata section, next to the thumbnail view..
Did you know that UH Manoa faculty, staff, and students have electronic access to Cold Spring Harbor (CSH) Protocols through the UH Manoa Library subscription? The CSH Protocols database currently contains over 500 protocols. According to their FAQ, “Protocols on CSH Protocols come from a variety of sources, including Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press Manuals and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Courses. New protocols are actively being solicited by the editorial staff of CSH Protocols, and we encourage all scientists to submit their protocols to the site… The protocols cover a wide range of fields within molecular and cell biology, from bioinformatics and computational biology to basic microscopy and electrophoresis… All published protocols are peer-reviewed by experts to ensure technical quality.
