Revised Winter Interim Library Services

From the office of the University Librarian:

There has been a change in the hours for Hamilton Library during the Winter Interim. The Vice-chancellor for Academic Affairs has allocated funds so that Hamilton Library will be open during the third week of Winter Interim, January 4-8, 2010, albeit with limited service.

Hamilton Library will be open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

WHAT’S AVAILABLE

• Library materials from the general collections may be charged at a self-checkout machine.
• The Business Window will have shortened hours (10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.)  allowing Library users to pay fines or purchase copy-cards.
• CLIC, the ITS/Library computer lab, will be available to UH-affiliated users and have lab monitors 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Sinclair Library will be open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

As a reminder, Hamilton and Sinclair Library will be closed Winter Interim from December 20 to January 3.

During this time, the Library will endeavor to make sure that any interruption of on-line access to the catalog, databases, ejournals, and ebooks is minimal.

Librarians will answer email queries as time allows.

Hawaii Voyager Down for Move, 22 Dec 2009

The Hawaii Voyager server has been in a temporary location in Sinclair Library since the October 2004 flood. Our Systems Office is hoping to move this equipment from Sinclair Library to the new server room in Hamilton Library on the morning of Tuesday, 22 December 2009. (We are waiting to see if the new server room will actually be ready!) If all goes according to plan, this means that starting around 6:00 a.m. on that date, Hawaii Voyager will not be available. The Systems Office expects that the move and restoration of the system will take all day. Please plan your library catalog searching accordingly.

BTW, I am told that this move should NOT impact access to UH Manoa electronic resources.

Library Servers Down This Weekend – Reminder

Due to a fumigation project affecting Sinclair Library on Manoa campus, we will be shutting down the UH Voyager library servers after 4pm on Wednesday November 25th (Thanksgiving Eve).  After we get the all clear from the fumigation company, we may be able to bring the library servers back up by the evening of the 27th (Friday) at the earliest.

The nature of this project requires that all of the air conditioning units in the basement of Sinclair Library be shut down during the fumigation, and our library servers cannot handle the high temperatures that will result after the AC is turned off for such a long period of time.

We will try to keep the proxy server that handles electronic resources for libraries outside of the UH Manoa campus up and running during the Voyager outage.

More Interlibrary Loan News

From the UH Manoa Library’s Interlibrary Loan Office:

Effective January 11, 2010, to facilitate the prompt return of ILL loan materials, fees and fines are assessed at the following rates, per item:

• Overdues: $.25 per day
• Recalls: $.50 per day
• Fines are assessed every day including weekends and holidays
• An item is considered “lost” when the fine reaches $10
• Lost charges include the replacement cost of an item, a $10 NON-REFUNDABLE processing fee, plus any processing fees imposed by the lending library, and accumulated overdue fines.

We appreciate your returning ILL loans in a timely manner. This allows us to keep a good borrowing relationship with the lending libraries. Overdue and lost books may result in the inability to borrow books from the lender in the future. Having our borrowing privileges suspended by other libraries affects everyone who uses ILL, including your fellow students, faculty, and staff. Mahalo for your consideration.

Here is a list of highlights:

• New! In the Voyager “My Account”, you will be able to see your checked out ILL items  and due dates.
• Convenience! You will be able to view all of your checked out items conveniently in one system (UHM, UH system, and ILL loans).
• New! You will receive automated email notices for due date courtesy reminders, overdues, and recalls.
• New! Fines and fees payments can be made at the Hamilton Library’s Business Office
• Renewals/re-requesting must be done by contacting the ILL office staff directly by phone (956-8568) or via your ILLiad accounts. (ILL renewals cannot be done via Voyager.)

Library Closed Between Semesters

Subject:  Suspension of Services during the Winter Interim

This message is intended for University of Hawaii at Manoa students, faculty, staff, and others who are planning to visit the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the coming months.

Due to a budget shortfall the Library will be closed as follows during the Winter Interim:

• Hamilton Library will be closed December 20, 2009 – January 10, 2010.  Hamilton is currently closed Saturdays this Fall Semester.
• Sinclair Library will be closed December 20 – January 3 with limited services available January 4-10.

During these periods when the Library is closed, services will be unavailable, including borrowing, delivery, interlibrary loan, and telephone inquiries. Library faculty will respond to e-mail information queries as time allows. Please return books prior to end of semester, but books may be returned to the book return bins during the Interim. The Hawaii Voyager library catalog and some electronic resources will also be unavailable during part of the Interim for scheduled maintenance to servers.

This closure will affect interlibrary loan requests in particular.  There may be a several-week delay in fulfilling interlibrary loan requests submitted.  If you have interlibrary loan requests that need to be filled before the Winter Interim or during the first few weeks of Spring Semester, please make these requests as soon as possible.

Grad Student Workshop: Tools for Staying Current

You may have noticed that we are starting to put together a series of workshops on topics of interest to science graduate students. There is one more of these workshops this semester and there are still seats available!

Next week Thursday, I will be presenting “Taking Control: Tools for Staying Current on Your Research Topic”. I will talk about using online tools to stay current in your area of study. We will explore ways to receive alerts about new publications and use RSS feeds to keep tabs on what’s going on in your field. The session will be hands on, so you’ll leave the workshop with a Google Reader account set up and ready to keep you updated. The workshop is on 12 November from 11:00 am to noon. International Year of Astronomy Lecture Series

This talk will center on the often strained relationship between modern astronomers and indigenous peoples with their sacred mountains. Examples from the Tahono O’odham, San Carlos Apache, and Zuni tribes will be presented. Finally the situations on Maunakea and Haleakala will be presented.

ScienceDirect Outage Tomorrow, 31 Oct 2009

From our Electronic Resources Librarian:

ScienceDirect, the online platform for Elsevier journals, will be down for scheduled maintenance this Saturday, Oct. 31, starting at 3 p.m. Hawaii time. The outage is scheduled to last until midnight of the same day. The University of Hawaii at Manoa currently has access to approximately 2,000 journals via ScienceDirect.
